Constant gum inflammation and an increase in oral bacteria could be linked to the development of different types of cancer.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The medical journal <\/span>Gut<\/span> of the <\/span>British Society of Gastroenterology<\/span> has published the study <\/span>\"Periodontal disease, tooth loss and risk of oesophageal and gastric adenocarcinoma: a prospective study\"<\/span> signed by the researcher Mingyang Song, epidemiologist and gastroenterologist at Harvard Medical School, whose main conclusions seem to indicate that <\/span>there is a link between stomach or oesophageal cancer and periodontal diseases<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a first study <\/span><\/b>conducted in July 2020, Song's team worked on finding evidence to confirm the <\/span>link between periodontal disease and tooth loss<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>stomach and oesophageal cancer<\/span><\/b>. Even then, the team realised that they <\/span>needed to focus the study on the behaviour of the microbiota of the oral cavity<\/span><\/b> and how it might link the two diseases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Data from this first study <\/span>showed<\/span><\/b> that people who had suffered from <\/span>dental disease were 52% more likely to develop stomach cancer and 43% more likely to develop oesophageal cancer.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the study also concluded that people affected by <\/span>tooth loss increased<\/span><\/b> their risk of <\/span>stomach cancer by 33% and oesophageal cancer by 42%.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been proven that the high systemic inflammation<\/span><\/b> caused by periodontal disease <\/span>can favour the development of cancer<\/span><\/b>. In addition, an <\/span>increase in bacteria in the mouth and gums<\/span><\/b> can also contribute to the development of this disease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Song also <\/span>published<\/span> a study that already linked <\/span>colon cancer to oral pathologies<\/span><\/b>. In this case, the data showed that <\/span>people with gum disease had a 17% increased risk of serrated polyps and an 11% increased risk of conventional adenomas.<\/span><\/b> Similarly, <\/span>the loss of 4 or more teeth increased the risk of developing these polyps by 20%.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the data<\/span><\/b> from studies <\/span>can not establish a direct link <\/span><\/b>between periodontal diseases and gastrointestinal cancer, <\/span>there is evidence that suggests further research into the influence of the oral microbiota<\/span><\/b> and its role in gum health and the occurrence of these types of diseases. <\/span><\/p>\n
